Greece Pilgrimage Day 3

Today we all slept because of the late night and had mass at 9a before taking a short drive to visit to the famous Meteora Monasteries. In Greek, “meteora” means “suspended in air.”  Indeed, the monasteries seem to be just that, built on natural rock pillars of the Pindus Mountains. The monasteries we saw were from the 14th and 15th centuries. Of the 24 that were built, only 6 remain, having suffered the centuries and even bombing during WWII. We toured two of these impressive sites. Returning to the city of Kalambaka we had a few free hours for lunch and shopping. Some people visited two Greek Orthodox Churches to hear vespers prayed. It was a much more relaxing day!
