12 JAN ~ Thursday ~ Mount of Olives, Church of the Ascension, Gethsemane, Upper Room, Israel Museum, Shrine of the Book, Model of 1st Century Jerusalem, Kotel Tunnel ~ Our first stop was at the Church of the Ascension to pray a decade of the rosary. From here atop the Mt. of Olives Jesus ascended to heaven (Luke 24:50-53; Acts 1:9-12.) Then we all walked from the top of the Mount of Olives along Jesus' Palm Sunday route, stopping at the Dominus Flevit Chapel, where “Jesus Wept” (John 11:35.) Jeff taught about suffering as we overlooked the old city of Jerusalem. At the base of the Mt. of Olives is the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36) and the Church of All Nations where we had mass. After crossing the Kidron Valley by motor coach, we stopped on Mt. Zion, where we can visited the traditional Upper Room, revered as the site of the Last Supper (Mark 14:12-26.) Later we visited the the restored Model of 1st Century Jerusalem -- a wonderful way to understand the Old City as it was in New Testament times. After dinner we visited the Kotel Tunnel that runs along the western wall of the Temple Mount. The view of the Western Wall was breath-taking, and the plaza was filled with soldiers being sworn in to the Israeli army.
