As you know we are coming up on a very important election November 4th. I read the new book by archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver, "Render Unto Caesar: Serving the Nation by Living our Catholic Beliefs in Political Life." I think that he has done a remarkable job of giving us the Catholic perspective when it comes to being active in the public square. Between now and the election I would like to give you some of the great quotes from his book.
Recently, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made some bold and incorrect statements about the Catholic Church and its stand on abortion. Some Catholics don't understand what the Church actually teaches about abortion and oftentimes come to conclusions based on media spin. Many times good Catholics are influenced by those who speak as if they were authorities on Church doctrine rather than reading and acting on the teachings of our great bishops. I'm encouraging Catholics to take some time to read archbishop Chaput's great work, rather than listening to those who say they are Catholic but disregard the teachings of the Church and promote their own social agendas. We need to think, we need to pray and we need to vote.
